If you were married to your ex-spouse for at least ten years, you may be able to receive benefits based on his or her earnings record. It doesn't matter how long ago you were married to that person as long as the marriage lasted for at least ten years.

You can not collect divorce benefits on an ex-spouse's earnings if you have remarried. However, if you have been married more than once and each marriage lasted at least ten years, you can collect benefits on either of your ex-spouse's earnings. So if one benefit would be higher than the other you can choose the higher benefit, no matter which ex-spouse it is based on or how long ago the marriage ended.

Similar to retirement and spousal benefits, you must wait until age 62 before you can start receiving divorce benefits. The early retirement penalty will apply, so just remember that your benefits will be reduced permanently if you apply before you reach your full retirement age.

Your ex-spouse must be age 62 or older and must be eligible for benefits before you can apply for divorce benefits against his record. However, if you have been divorced for at least 2 years, you can apply for benefits before your ex-spouse applies. In addition, you do NOT have to notify your ex-spouse to apply for benefits against his record. He doesn't ever have to know you are receiving benefits based on his earnings record. You just need to give the Social Security administration enough information so that they can calculate your benefits.

If you are divorced, it could benefit you to apply for benefits based on your ex-spouse's earnings, especially if his earnings are significantly higher than yours. This could also affect your future marriage plans, since this benefit would end if you remarried, so it's important to plan carefully to make sure you get the greatest benefit you are entitled to.

The developers of the 802.11 standard were aware of this threat to consumer privacy early on so they designed a system of encrypting data that makes a wireless network just as secure as a wired network. They called it WEP or Wired Equivalent Privacy. WEP worked fine for a while but the way it was designed combined with increasing computer speeds made it easier to decode and decipher the WEP Key. Once someone in a car out on the street has your WEP key they may as well be sitting in your living room or watching over your shoulder.

As a result of the need for a newer, stronger encryption method WPA or Wi-Fi Protected Access was developed. Not only is WPA more secure it's more user-friendly. A plain text pass phrase is all that's needed to secure your devices. The ugly hexadecimal keys of WEP are gone. The major improvement of WPA over WEP is the patterns of encryption it uses are much more random and the key actually changes according to a time frame you can specify! WPA has a new big brother called WPA2 which uses the advanced AES method of encryption. While WEP can be cracked in a few hours WPA2 and AES has yet to be cracked.

The safeguards mentioned here are all very common and easy to come by. Excellent Internet Security Suites are now available in most electronics stores. Virtually all routers come with built-in SPI firewalls and manufacturers of network devices have made great strides to make setting up wireless encryption on your wireless network as easy as possible. Social Security Survivor Benefits - What Happens to Your Social Security Income When One Spouse Dies

When Social Security was first established, it only paid retirement income to workers who qualified. It was later amended to include benefits for spouses and survivors, which made it more of a family or insurance plan, instead of just a retirement plan.

Unfortunately, it is inevitable that many husbands and wives will find themselves widowed during their retirement. This is not only a huge loss emotionally, but can be a huge loss financially as well, especially since the survivor will lose the income earned by the spouse that has passed away.

The Social Security survivor benefit was created to ensure that the surviving spouse wouldn't lose all of their income when the first spouse passes. Basically, the survivor income is 100% of the spouse's benefit before he or she passed. Assuming that both spouses are already receiving Social Security, if the spouse with the higher amount of Social Security passes away first, the spouse with the lower payment will get an increase in her income. However if the spouse with the lower benefit passes first, the surviving spouse's benefit will not change.

Social Security Survivor Benefits - What Happens to Your Social Security Income When One Spouse Dies

There are some rules in order to qualify for the survivor benefit: The couple must have been married for at least 9 months before the spouse's death, unless his death was a result of an accident. Also, divorced spouses may qualify for widow's benefits as long as they were married for at least 10 years.

Widows can apply for survivor benefits starting at age 60, or age 50 if they are disabled. Just like with retirement and spousal benefits, the widow may not want to start collecting at age 60 because the benefit will be reduced for every month received before reaching full retirement age. A widow can expect to receive anywhere from 71.5% to 100% of her deceased spouse's benefit depending on how old she is when she starts collecting the survivor benefit.

It's important to note that as a widow you will receive the survivor benefit or your own benefit, whichever is higher. So your benefit will go up if your spouse's benefit was higher than your own, however you will still lose one benefit, so your total income from Social Security could be 1/3 to 1/2 lower than it was before your spouse passed.

One strategy to help maximize your total benefits assuming your spouse passes before you reach full retirement age is to start collecting widow's benefits when your spouse passes (assuming you are at least age 60 or your are age 50 and disabled), then switch to your own benefit once you reach your full retirement age. This will allow your own retirement benefits to continue earning credits and therefore will increase your retirement benefit. Or, if the survivor benefit is significantly higher than your own benefit, you could apply for your own benefit early, then switch to the survivor benefit when you reach full retirement age.

Receive Your Social Security Benefits Outside the United States

Yes, you can receive your social security benefits outside the United States.  If fact, you can have them deposited into your foreign bank account.  So, fear of not receiving your social security benefit checks should not deter you from your expatriate living dreams and life abroad.  

This concern about not receiving your social security check abroad can be alleviated it you are aware of certain stipulations.   This discussion is primarily for U.S. citizens living abroad, since there are specific regulations that relate to citizens of other countries which are eligible for social security benefits because of their work history in the U.S.  Three important questions for you to consider carefully before making the move follow:   

1.    When are you outside the United States?  The Social Security Administration says you are considered outside the U.S. if you are not in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands or American Samoa. Once you have been out of the U.S. for at least 30 days in a row, you are considered to be outside the country until you return and stay in the U.S. for at least 30 days in a row. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you also may have to prove that you were lawfully present in the U.S. for that 30-day period.

2.    How and where can I receive my Social Security benefit checks?  The easiest solution is to have your benefit checks deposited into a U.S. bank and use your ATM or debit card to access your money.   If you wish to have the money deposited abroad there are other considerations.  Presently Social Security lists  44 countries in which you can have your benefits directly deposited to a bank in those countries.  There are likewise certain countries to which by law social security benefit checks may not be sent.  These can change but as of the time of my writing this, the U.S. Treasury Department forbids sending social security benefits to Cuba and North Korea.  In addition, Social Security restrictions prohibit sending payments to individuals in Cambodia, Vietnam or areas that were in the former Soviet Union (other than Armenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Russia).

3.    Can I lose my benefits by living abroad?  Yes, but only if you do not abide by the governmental stipulations that govern your benefits.  In that sense, it is no different living abroad than living in the United States.  Additionally, you may periodically be sent a questionnaire from Social Security asking for update information.  If you fail to send this back in a timely fashion it could result in stoppage of your benefit payments.  For the most part, retention of your benefits is no different when living abroad than when living in the U.S.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free product from Microsoft Windows. It was relatively easy to install and configure to my system. It is free but it will validate your version of Windows. Make sure you are running a legitimate version of Microsoft Windows or it will NOT install. You will have to uninstall any existing anti-virus/anti-spyware software or you may run into compatibility issues when you install it.

I have recently installed this software and let it run for a few days. Overall I am pleased on well it works. This is a good program that combines the anti-virus and spyware protection together. It was easy to configure once it is installed. The software gives solid protection with options to quarantine, allow or remove the files that may be causing your system harm. It also will update the spyware/virus definitions automatically with the choice of doing a manual update on the fly.

However this program has some potential drawbacks. It is an "All-in-one" software so if a virus were to attack it, it would make your system vulnerable to the virus or other forms of attack. Hackers or someone else could try to find weaknesses in the program to exploit it or to attack your system once a weakness in the program have been found. This would not be the case if you had a layered security structure in our computer with separate programs from anti-virus and anti-spyware protection.
